In Support of the Brake for Kids Act (S. 2812)
Protecting Children at Every Stop
Dear Senator,
I am a citizen of Charleston County, South Carolina. I am reaching out regarding an important safety issue that impacts the students on school buses and seek your support for the Brake for Kids Act (S. 2812).
Illegal passing of stopped school buses is an ever-increasing problem for the school bus industry. By design, school buses are the safest form of transportation on the road. However, we lose an average of 30 children every year when oncoming traffic blows past the stop arm signs and flashing lights as children board or disembark their school buses. Thousands more are injured. This action is illegal in all 50 States!
I am seeking your co-sponsorship of the Brake for Kids Act (S 2812), which will direct the Department of Transportation to execute a public service messaging campaign with national reach to raise awareness of this important safety issue. These campaigns have proven to be very successful in moving the needle on other road safety issues. The bill is bipartisan, introduced by Senators Todd Young (R-IN) and Gary Peters (D-MI). It was included in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s BUILD America 250 Act and we are hopeful it will be included in the Senate surface transportation reauthorization bill whenever that occurs.
